I have been involved in a car crash; do I have to replace my car seat?

After a car accident, it is crucial to assess whether the car seat is still safe to use. A car seat should always be replaced if any of the following conditions are met:

  1. Activation of airbags or other safety systems: If any of the built-in safety systems have been activated or deployed during the accident.
  2. Interior damage to the car: If there are visible damages inside the car caused by the collision.
  3. Collision with larger animals: If the car seat has been involved in a collision with a larger animal.
  4. Repair costs exceeding £3,000/EUR 3,500 : If the costs to repair damages related to the collision exceed £3,000 GBP.

If any of the above conditions are met we recommend getting in contact with your insurance company. The conditions above are an international recommendation developed by a national expert group for child safety in cars, SIS/TK 242. The group includes representatives from child car seat and car manufacturers with subcontractors, consumer organisations, test institutes, traffic researchers, and insurance companies.
